Before the expiration of the transfer deadline, a new arrival: Alexandru Crețu has become a new member of the NK Maribor. The 25-year-old Romanian player (190 cm, 80 kg) has signed the contract until 2021.
He won’t need long time to adapt to the environment. He came to Slovenia the previous winter, and changed Ljubljana for Maribor after a year. For Olimpija, he played 25 matches and achieved 2 goals. Before that, he had been a long-term member of Politehnica Iași (152 matches, 7 goals) and during that period also the Romanian U-21 representative player.
‘We have estimated that we need one additional player in the midfield after the departure of Marwan Kabha. We wanted to increase our competitiveness and we brought a player who we all know well from the Slovenian pitches. It should be noted that our move has nothing to do with his previous club. We did not decide for Crețu to take him away from Olimpija. We scrutinised him as a possible reinforcement if an agreement was reached. The deal has been concluded and we’re pleased that we have strengthened our forces with an excellent player that we need,’ Zlatko Zahoviè, the Sports Director, explained the decision on the arrival of a new player.
Crețu, the first Romanian footballer at the Ljudski Vrt, stated at the press conference presentation: ‘I would like to thank you for the trust; I am very happy to be here. I know what is awaiting me. Maribor is a great club, with intense competition in each position. I can’t wait to join the team. Unfortunately, I did not receive a lot of opportunities in the autumn part, but I carried out the winter preparations, played in preparatory trials, and I believe I am in good condition to start a new chapter. I have come to be a champion. I am a newcomer to the club, but not to Slovenia. I have become familiar with the city and the stadium; I like the environment. As a professional athlete, I want to give as much as I can to my club. What was before, is behind me. This is football; this is life. Maribor is my club now, and I will do everything to contribute my share to its new successes.’
Our last newcomer in the winter transfer window has chosen No. 8 to play in the purple.
